You should purchase a wedding insurance policy as soon as you make any bookings or pay any deposits towards your wedding. Our policies can be purchased up to 2 years before the wedding date.

Debenhams Wedding Insurance is arranged by UK General Insurance Limited.

The level of cover you need depends upon the size, type and cost of your wedding and reception. To work out the level of cover you need, consider all of the separate costs associated with the event. Take the following into consideration:

  • Cancellation or rearrangement of your wedding
  • Loss or damage of the Bride’s dress, the Groom’s outfit, wedding rings, wedding gifts and wedding cakes
  • Failure of all your wedding suppliers (photographers, caterers, hoteliers, chauffeurs, etc.)
  • If you’re hiring ceremonial swords or marquees, you should consider additional cover for these items

Common policy exclusions include the following:

  • Medical conditions
  • Duration the dress is covered before the wedding
  • Conditions relating to cover for gifts at the wedding reception
  • No cover for failure of the suppliers of gift lists
  • No cover for failure of the suppliers of wedding planner services
  • No cover for marquees, ceremonial swords or Public Liability for weddings taking place outside of the UK or Personal Liability cover for weddings taking place within the USA or Canada

Please read the policy wording document for full limitations and exclusions.

Yes, we cover up to 2 ceremonies and 2 receptions on separate dates are covered as standard, however the reception date must be within 56 days of your ceremony date.

No, you will need to take out separate event insurance.

Any services that are already booked will automatically be covered from the date the insurance is paid for and issued.

It’s important to review the cover you have, to ensure it is still suitable.

Personal Liability cover is intended to cover costs you may incur if you are held financially responsible for damages caused to another person or to their property. This cover is applicable to the marrying couple only and comes into force 24 hours before the wedding day and ends 24 hours following the reception. An example of a claim under this section would be if the Bride accidentally damaged a table belonging to the wedding venue when arranging table centre pieces. Cover is not available if ceremony and/or reception takes place in the USA or Canada.

Public Liability cover is similar to Personal Liability cover and is intended to cover costs you may incur if you are held financially responsible for damages caused to another person or to their property but it is extended to all family, friends and guests who attend the wedding and/or reception. This cover is applicable to the whole bridal party for the day of the wedding and the day of the reception. An example of a claim under this section would be if a guest accidentally knocked over an expensive vase belonging to the wedding venue. Cover is not available if ceremony and/or reception takes place outside the UK.

Following the bankruptcy or liquidation of your pre booked and contracted wedding services supplier, Failure of suppliers provides cover for the irrecoverable deposits and additional costs of arranging an alternative.

Couples who are in the armed forces may choose to walk under an arch of swords. These are usually borrowed from their regiment and are often very valuable. This insurance feature provides cover for loss or damage of the swords, upon payment of an additional premium. Cover is not available if ceremony and/or reception takes place outside the UK.

No, you will need to take out separate travel insurance to cover your honeymoon.

Yes, portable toilet facilities hired to use alongside a marquee are covered under the marquee section.

We don’t provide cover for wedding planners who have financial responsibility for the wedding budget, i.e. you provide the planner with a lump sum to arrange and pay for the individual services on your behalf. We would cover a wedding planner if you contract with them for the planning service only and contract directly with your individual suppliers separately.

The posting of a serving member of the UK armed forces is covered providing you are not aware of any impending/confirmed posting or call up for duty overseas around the time of the wedding, prior to purchasing a wedding insurance policy.

Yes, either of the marrying couples’ main residence must be in the UK. They must have been living permanently in the UK for at least six months prior to the purchase of this policy and they must be registered with a medical practitioner in the UK.

No, this would be classed as ‘disinclination to marry’ and is not covered under the policy.

Yes, civil partnerships are covered.

Yes, weddings abroad are covered, however you will need to take out separate travel insurance to cover your travel and accommodation.
If you have taken out additional cover for a marquee or cover for ceremonial swords, the wedding event at which these items are insured must take place in the UK. Additionally, Personal Liability cover does not extend to weddings and/or receptions in the USA or Canada and Public Liability cover is not available if ceremony and/or reception takes place outside the UK.
